With the cold months fully settled in and our social calendars less crowded at this time of year, it’s the perfect opportunity to take stock of your goals and invest in your own professional development, or that of your team. Luckily, there are plenty of resources online to help you get started. To help you save time, we’ve hand-picked a selection of free HR and leadership-focused courses and webinars available this season, or at your convenience.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence at Work l BerkeleyX: This course delves into the social and emotional skills that sustain positive relationships at work, highlighting the foundational and related skills of empathy and “emotional intelligence,” also known as EQ. Drawing on research and real-world case studies, the course reveals how honing these skills promotes well-being within an organization, effective teamwork, problem solving, and recovery from setbacks. The course also explains the psychological and neuroscientific roots of cooperative, compassionate behaviors and offers practical ways to strengthen empathy, trust, and collaboration among teams and resolve conflicts more constructively.

The Manager's Toolkit: A Practical Guide to Managing People at Work l University of London: This course offers a practical guide to managing people at work, engaging with novel HR theories and examining how they translate into every day working life. The course should leave leaders better equipped to choose a suitable employee, motivate and appraise their teams, and manage conflict in the workplace.

Coaching Skills for Leaders and Managers l LinkedIn Learning: In this course, leadership expert Sara Canaday shares the differences between managing, training and coaching, and provides managers with coaching models and skills to support the development and growth of their employees. Sara presents the business case for coaching, explores common challenges and explains how to provide feedback and set goals. Free with a one-month trial to LinkedIn Learning or with your local library card.

Advanced Communication For Leaders l MIT Sloan School of Management (OpenCourseWare): Take advantage of MIT’s free OpenCourseWare project to access a variety of education materials and full courses from this leading education institution. This course introduces interactive oral and interpersonal communication skills critical to leaders, including strategies for presenting to a hostile audience, running effective and productive meetings, active listening, and contributing to group decision-making.
